So this was a real kick in the pants on a lazy Saturday afternoon:
Better late than never, Royals-style
#Royals designate OF Jeff Francoeur for assignment. Recall 2B Johnny Giavotella from Class AAA Omaha.
— Bob Dutton (@Royals_Report) June 30, 2013
Later, Dutton reported that Giavotella is going to be the Royals’ regular second baseman.
In other words, HALLUHEFFINGLUJAH.
One has mixed emotions about these things. One is tempted so shout out, Nyah Nyah Nyah I told you, I told you so! But one also strives to comport oneself with all the good grace that one can muster. One is also tempted to hail the good news, and drink to the prospect of future successes.
But yet, one can’t help fearing that these two decisions, both of which should have been made at least three months ago, if not a year-and-a-half ago, are mere blips. That the Royals’ management hasn’t actually learned anything, and will have to be bludgeoned into good decision-making next time, and the time after that, too.
If Dayton Moore has suddenly come to believe in the power of objective analysis, there is hope for the Royals over the nxt two or three years. If this is just a blip, though? Well, as I’ve said many times over the years, when you follow a team that doesn’t generally know what it’s doing, you take your small pleasures where and when you can find them.
I’m going to enjoy watch Johnny Giavotella play second base. Beyond that, who can say.
