After starting 39 games for the National League champion Boston Braves in 1948 (and completing 28 of them to the tune of 314 2/3 innings), Johnny Sain was never quite the same again. Fortunately, he had a fall-back position: a Chevrolet franchise in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. By the time this postcard was produced around 1956 or 1957, his big league career was at an end. As it turned out, though, Sain’s real calling was not hawking Bel Airs, but tutoring moundsmen. Writing in Ball Four, Jim Bouton had nothing but contempt for his pitching coach on the Seattle Pilots, Sal Maglie, while also having nothing but praise for Sain’s tutoring abilities - and he was not alone in that opinion.
