This morning I was on the radio in Pittsburgh, and one of the hosts asked me how I would rank the top Most Valuable Player candidates in the National League. He mentioned Andrew McCutchen (my choice) and Paul Goldschmidt, both of them fine candidates. He also mentioned Yasiel Puig, whom I basically dismissed because of playing time.
Yasiel Puig has another moment

Which I think was fair. But then you see something like this ...
... and you wonder just how many runs this guy’s worth, as a hitter and a runner and a fielder and whatever the hell else he’s doing upon donning that classic jersey.
My vote’s still with McCutchen, because he’s been fantastic and he’s been there all season. But do you remember when one of the arguments against Puig as an All-Star was that he hadn’t yet proved how good he was? Well, it’s a month later and he still looks pretty good.
Or as Keith Hernandez said Wednesday night, Oh my goodness.
