Scoring in antiquity

This is a scorekeeping device featuring a 1911 Rambler (not an 1897 as the seller suggests). In the first light of the automobile revolution, Rambler, built by the Thomas B. Jeffrey Company, was one of the top-selling brands. Apparently, they introduced the spare tire to the industry, a development for which we can all be grateful - although we can probably assume that someone else would have come up with it by now.

I wonder if anybody at a game ever used one of these scorekeeping devices to actually keep track. Note that two of the scoring wheels are dedicated to the arcane practice of keeping a running total of errors. This persists to this day on scoreboards even though the impact of errors has long been diminished.
