They had no less than 16 doubleheaders, meaning they got something like 3,200 fans every time they opened the gates. Yup, it was a Golden Age of Baseball, all right.

And what did these fans get for their money? How about a less-than one-in-three chance of seeing the home nine come away with a victory? Actually, 1940 was the eye of a particularly bad Phillies storm. They only lost 103 games that year, as opposed to 105 and 106 in the two previous seasons and 111 and 109 in the two seasons that followed.
