Until this very day I never gave much thought to the unexposed portion of the pitching rubber or “slab.” I just assumed - like most of you - that it went all the way to the center of the earth where it was attached to the inner core with molly bolts. Apparently, this is not the case, as this 1952 advertisement from the Seamless Rubber Company illustrates.
