London Olympics 2012 Online Viewing May Be Low

The complete 2012 London Olympics will be available online, but recent research shows that sports fans might not take advantage of the new technology.

The 2012 London Olympics will be available to watch nearly everywhere thanks to advances in technology and to a rampant uptick since 2008 in smart phones, tablets and everything else that allows people to carry the Internet with them where ever they end up going.

It would seem that the news regarding the Olympics’ online availability -- every event will be streamed live on YoutTube -- would lead to quite a few people watching the event via means more modern than the simple television set. That apparently won’t be the case, however, according to the research for Perform Group’s Global Sports Media Consumption Report 2012.

  • Watching via PC - just nine percent of sports fans in the UK and 16 percent in the U.S. plan to view online.
  • Watching via mobile - even lower: just three percent in the UK and seven percent in the U.S..
  • Watching via TV - that compares with 64 percent of Brits and 71 percent of Americans who said they would watch the Olympics via regular TV.

The research didn’t provide reasoning for the lower interest in online viewing, but one might expect that the higher quality television broadcasts are just easier. There is a chance, however, that viewers simply aren’t yet aware of how easy it will be to watch the 2012 Olympics online.
