Nothing Says ‘Olympic Committee’ Like ‘Black Market Ticket Scandal’

The International Olympic Committee may be rife with corruption, but don’t ever accuse it of not being clever. At this year’s London Olympics, ticket pricing begins at 20.12 pounds, and it’s capped at 2,012 pounds. You know, except for all the tickets that various committee members have been selling on the black market.

From the AP (via Deadspin):

LONDON (AP) -- International Olympic officials have opened a high-level investigation into allegations that authorized representatives in more than 50 countries - including a national Olympic committee - were involved in selling London Olympics tickets on the black market for profit.

The International Olympic Committee convened an emergency session Saturday to discuss a dossier of evidence presented to it by Britain’s Sunday Times. The newspaper published an investigation Sunday claiming that officials have been offering tickets for the July 27-Aug. 12 London games, including highly sought-after events such as the men’s 100-meter final, at vastly inflated prices.

Ahhhh, yes.

The story is behind a paywall at Britain’s Sunday Times, but you can read more from Deadspin and the AP. One thing is clear: Between FIFA and the IOC, these international governing bodies consistently put American sports corruption to shame. Your move, BCS and NCAA!
