Michael Phelps Shaves Mustache, Will Swim 400m IM

After he won the gold medal in the 400m IM at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Michael Phelps said he would never again compete in the event, considered to be the most grueling in swimming. So much for that.

Phelps will indeed swim the taxing 400m IM at the 2012 U.S. Olympics Swim Trials, which begin Monday. USA Swimming confirmed the news shortly after Phelps not-so-subtly made the announcement ... by shaving his mustache, obviously.

The preliminary heats for the 400m IM begin Monday at 11 a.m. ET. The finals are Monday night, and will likely be the first showdown between Phelps and Ryan Lochte. The heats will be shown later on NBC Sports Network (6-8:30 p.m.), while the finals will air live on NBC and stream on NBCOlympics.com (8-9 p.m.). Phelps is swimming in Heat 10; Lochte is in Heat 12, the final heat.

It’s worth noting that Phelps could still scratch after his morning heat if he decides not to compete in the finals.
