Opening Ceremony Will Not Be Streamed Online

It’s 2012. I watch live Red Sox games on my phone. When news breaks, I use my iPad to read about it on Twitter so quickly that within five minutes it seems like old news (typically with #RonP jokes). Keep that in mind as you read this: NBC will not stream the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics online. At all.

NBC is advertising “32 Sports, 302 Events, All Live Online,” but that apparently does not include the Opening Ceremony. The only place to see that is on NBC when they air it -- tape delayed -- at 7:30 p.m. ET (the production starts in London at 9 p.m. local time). While this certainly seems silly, it was the was the plan all along.

“We are live streaming every sporting event, all 32 sports and 302 medals. It was never our intent to live stream the Opening Ceremony or Closing Ceremony,” said the NBC spokesperson when reached for comment.

“They are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large primetime audiences that gather together to watch them. We will be providing clips and highlights of each ceremony online so viewers know what to look forward to in primetime on NBC.”

The Opening Ceremony will also be held until 7:30 p.m. on the West Coast, which means, as our own Tom Ziller pointed out, NBC will be tape-delaying a tape delay.
