Olympic Opening Ceremony Full Of Film, Music, Television... And iPhones

Danny Boyle has created a multi-media homage to British pop culture

If you like British pop entertainment, you’re in for a treat with the London 2012 Opening Ceremony. Film director Danny Boyle, whose vision created the program, created a two-hour advertisement for British music, film, television and book-publishing businesses.

When the Queen is escorted to the ceremony, it’s on the arm of James Bond...Daniel Craig. When the symphony performs the theme song from Chariots of Fire, Mr. Bean is right there playing along with them. A long montage remembers British-fiction villains like Cruella de Vil, Lord Voldemort and the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The ode to British music is woven around an homage to social technology from the Internet to iphones, complete with a child walking around staring at his phone.

Plus, there’s lots of people dancing. Lots. And lots.

It has its moments. But as with almost all of these Olympic Opening Ceremonies, I’m left wishing they’d just introduce Greece already and get the parade of nations going...
