2012 Olympics: Lasha Shavdatuashvili Wins Men’s 66 kg Judo Gold

On Day 2 of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the men’s 66 kg Judo gold medal was awarded to Georgia’s Lasha Shavdatuashvili. The 20-year-old Judoka stunned the former world champion, Japan’s Masashi Ebinuma, in an automatic ippon to win, utilizing a sumi-gaeshi throw to reach the gold medal round. In the final round, Shavdatuashvili defeated Hungary’s Miklos Ungvari to take home the gold medal.

In the bronze medal rounds, Japan’s Masashi Ebinuma defeated Poland’s Pawel Zagrodnik by ippon, using a o-goshi to win the match and medal. In the second bronze medal round, South Korea’s Cho Jun-Ho was able to defeat Spain’s Sugoi Uriarte and win the second bronze medal. Earlier in the tournament, Jun-Ho lost to Ebinuma, but both walk away with bronze medals.
