Americans David Boudia and Nick McCrory won a bronze medal in men’s 10m platform synchronized diving on Monday, the first Olympic medal for both men. Their final score was 463.47, just over 5 points behind the silver medalists from Mexico. Boudia and McCrory’s final dive was an impressive 95.60 with a back 2 1/2 Somersault with 2 1/2 Twists. That is the same dive that won openly gay diver Matthew Mitcham gold in the 10m platform in Beijing.

Duo first American males to win Olympic diving medal since 1996, Brits miss bronze after disastrous dive
Boudia competed in the same event in Beijing with his then-partner Thomas Finchum. The duo finished fifth in Beijing. Finchum failed to make the U.S. Olympic team this year and has since retired from diving to focus on a music career (he has a haunting rendition of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’). McCrory, a student at Duke University, is competing in his first Olympic Games.
It’s the first medal for an American male diver since Mark Lenzi won bronze in the 3m springboard in 1996. Incidentally, that was the last time American diving legend Greg Louganis attended the Olympic Games. He is there this year as a mentor to the divers.
Hometown boy Tom Daley finished in fourth place with his diving partner, Peter Waterfield. Their combined score was almost 10 points behind Boudia and McCrory due to a disastrous fourth dive that included some scores of 6.0.
Boudia, McCrory, Daley and Waterfield will mix it up again in the men’s 10m platform next weekend, where they will face defending gold medalist Mitcham.
