Women’s 200m IM Final: Ye Shiwen Wins Gold Again For China

Ye Shiwen’s massive Olympics in the pool got even better when she scored her second gold medal, in the women’s 200m IM, on Tuesday.

Ye Shiwen is just 15 years of age, and swimming in her first Olympics. It’s hard to say these Summer Games don’t already belong to her after just four days in the pool, however: Ye used a fantastic finish to take the women’s 200-meter individual medley on Tuesday.

Ye finished in a time of 2:07.57, a new Olympic mark in the event, and the way she did it foretells far more success for her in London.

Australia’s Stephanie Rice broke quick and led after 50 meters, but Ye overtook her in the backstroke. U.S. swimmer Caitlin Leverenz dominated the breaststroke, though, putting Ye far enough back to force her to storm back in the final 50 meters of freestyle.

That she did, putting distance between herself and the rest of the field en route to the Olympic record and gold medal. Australia’s Alicia Coutts finished second in 2:08.15, and Leverenz won bronze with her time of 2:08.95.

Ye's gold is China's third in the pool, and the nation's sixth swimming medal overall.
