Australian Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham on Wednesday showed YouTube viewers where his mind is a week before his 10-meter platform competition. The gold medalist in 2008 posted a video of himself singing Beyoncé‘s “Single Ladies” between practices in London. Mitcham, one of only three openly gay male Olympians, wrote on YouTube:

someone on twitter asked me to upload a video of me playing the ukulele. I profess to be neither a great instrumentalist nor singer, I'm just an Olympic diver who likes to strum away in his spare time.

The guy exudes charm. I got to meet him at the Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, and he couldn’t have been nicer or more gracious. He’s always got a smile, always seems to have a nice word to say, and his voice isn’t half bad. Maybe he and Thomas Finchum can team up on a duet.

By the way, take a look at the room he’s in. If that’s his dorm room for the Olympic Games, how can they expect him to be in tip-top shape with no wall hangings?

In case you weren’t aware, Mitcham shocked the world twice in 2008, first coming out of the closet as a gay Olympian, then performing the highest-scoring dive in Olympic history to win gold. OK, maybe a diver coming out isn’t shocking ... and certainly not given his selection of “Single Ladies” for his ukelele ballad. But he was the only openly gay male Olympian in Beijing. And that dive was still awesome.
