Nadzeya Ostapchuk Wins Women’s Shot Put For Belarus

UPDATE: The IOC has stripped Ostapchuk of her gold medal after she tested positive for steroids.

Strong women throwing things dominated the women’s shot put at the 2012 Olympics on Monday, which was far more reasonable than weak women not throwing things doing it. Belarus’ Nadzeya Ostapchuk won the event easily.

Ostapchuk hit 21.36 meters on her third of six attempts, and scored the only two attempts of more than 21 meters in the final. New Zealand’s Valerie Adams took silver with a toss of 20.70 meters, and Russia’s Evgeniia Kolodko secured bronze at 20.48 meters.

Adams is the 2008 gold medalist and 2011 world champion in the event, but put just three of her six attempts between the lines, allowing Ostapchuk (who won bronze in Beijing) to claim the top spot on the medal podium.

Both Belarus and New Zealand have eight medals at the 2012 Games.
