American Sarah Hammer Wins Track Cycling Silver In Women’s Omnium

Sarah Hammer’s silver medal in women’s omnium is her second medal in women’s cycling at the 2012 Olympics.

Team USA added another medal at the cycling track on Tuesday, as Sarah Hammer added to her Olympic haul with a silver in women’s omnium. Meanwhile, Australia scored its first cycling gold medal of these 2012 Summer Games, thanks to Anna Meares winning the women’s sprint.

Hammer scored 19 points over the six-stage competition, adding the second silver of her Olympics to one earned with the U.S. in women’s team pursuit.

Great Britain’s Laura Trott (18 points) won gold in the event, and Australia’s Annette Edmonson (24) took bronze.

In case you have no idea what the omnium is: it’s made up of six events — a flying lap, a points race, an elimination race, an individual pursuit, a scratch race, and a time trial — and competitors are awarded points for their finishes in each, with better finishes earning fewer points.

Meares won the best-of-three final of the women’s sprint in two photo finishes over Great Britain’s Victoria Pendleton. Guo Shuang of China took bronze in the event.

Great Britain leads all nations with 11 cycling medals at the 2012 Olympics, and no other country even has as many total cycling medals as Team GB’s seven golds.
