American Troy Dumais earned a spot in the 3-meter springboard finals on Tuesday, with a score of 490.55. He placed fifth in the semifinals, but if he wants to earn a medal, he’ll have to step up his game. His highest-scoring semifinal dive was 86.70; The four divers ahead of him all had at least one dive of 90-plus.

Dumais in fifth after the semifinals, Colwill has disastrous fifth dive
Dumais has already earned a bronze medal in the synchronized 3-meter springboard, with teammate Kristian Ipsen.
Fellow American Chris Colwill, who had made the top-10 in the prelims, failed to make the final, finishing 18th of 18 divers in the semis. Colwill was positioned beautifully to make the finals, until a disastrous fifth dive sent him out of the top 10.
“I just kind of zoned out. I stood on the board for too long,” he said. “It was a freak accident and just happened at the wrong time.”
He said he “went for it” on his sixth dive, since he had fallen so far. He wanted to score 100 or zero, he said. The judges opted for the latter.
Canadian Alex Despatie, a favorite with many gay fans, also made the finals, in eighth place.
