On Sunday, Jack Harry apparently* dropped the “Gayhawks” bomb typically reserved for YouTube comments and bars in Big 12 towns on a live broadcast on 41 Action News in Kansas City. Rock Chalk Blog has the clip. (The asterisk is there in the event the YouTube clip was doctored. It does not remotely appear to be doctored.)
Kansas City broadcaster drops ‘Gayhawks’ slur, denies it, believes America to be universally deaf
K.C. broadcaster and avowed Missouri fan Jack Harry clearly referred to Kansas basketball as the “Gayhawks” live on air on Sunday. He’s now telling us it never happened.
Barring that doctor job, Harry made a horribly dumb decision to use a pretty stupid, completely offensive and wholly juvenile slur in front of thousands of viewers, many of whom (as Kansas basketball fans and decent human beings) will be offended.
Even more dumb is Harry’s decision to blame social media -- not himself -- for the episode and to completely deny saying what everyone who watches the YouTube above can see him saying. From MediaKC:
“I felt compelled to ensure you that you are completely deaf. Also, it’s Twitter’s fault.” Harry would have been better off blaming the slur on social media’s ongoing battle over hard and soft Gs as it pertains to the word GIF.
