Kanye West’s Yeezus tour is making its stop in his hometown of Chicago, with a performance in the United Center Wednesday night, and the rapper/egomaniac/genius/some combination of those things devoted a few minutes to the most famous person ever to perform in that building: Michael Jordan, singing and yelling for four minutes about how the greatest player in NBA history should not have been allowed his second, significantly less successful career arc with the Washington Wizards.
Kanye West’s new hit: “We should have never let Michael Jordan play for the Wizards”
One thing everybody can agree with Kanye West on: Michael Jordan being on the Wizards was weird.
Kanye yells for a long time about how disgraceful it was that after winning six championships in Chicago, Jordan ended up owning and playing for a team not in Chicago. He says a lot of stuff, because he’s Kanye West.
As Kelly Dwyer pointed out, the premise of Ye’s yelling is kinda flawed -- it’s not like Chicago *let* MJ go to Washington, there was a combination of stuff going on including Jordan’s ownership aspirations.
Ye’s had a sort of weird relationship with MJ. Last night, he said that he is “not Michael Jordan,” but in the past he’s said that he’s the Michael Jordan of music and just a few weeks back said the only reason Jordans still sell is because of the time’s he’d put on for the brand in past.
To be honest, I kinda have “WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER EVER LET MICHAEL JORDAN PLAY FOR THE WIZARDS” totally stuck in my head. It’s got a “Runaway” vibe (that’s the same chord progression, right?) It’s even good enough that we’re not talking about whatever it is Kanye is wearing!
