John Oliver is American television’s current darling -- presumably because most of the tv watching audience in the United States is only too happy to get their news from Harry Potter’s slightly meaner, funnier older brother -- and, being English, he was therefore the natural choice to explain soccer to fellow comedian David Letterman.
John Oliver STOMPS ALL OVER David Letterman’s fragile, dubious understanding of soccer (by being wrong, the idiot)

Unfortunately, his explanation of the English league system leaves a little to be desired. The factual mistakes are excusable, but Letterman was left horrendously confused by tiering and points systems*, and his attempts to clarify what actually happens with promotion and relegation were merrily steamrolled by Oliver going on an amusing comedy rampage. Funny, yes. Good at explaining? Not so much.
*If you want the nitty gritty of how the English system works, we’ve got you covered.
It is, however, entirely possible that by replying to questions with distracting, amusing but ultimately irrelevant replies, John Oliver is perfecting his sendup of a) English people and b) everyone involved in FIFA. We wouldn’t put it past him.
