Oakland A’s try to give away free money, City of Oakland declines

Well, not so much “declines” as “staples their shirt to the curtains and lights the building on fire.”

Paul Gilham

Were you running out of horrible stories to read? Good, because here’s one for you: The Oakland A’s, in conjunction with the Good Tidings foundation, wanted to give away as much as $150,000 to refurbish a rundown ballfield for kids. The City of Oakland kinda sorta wanted the money, but they had concerns ...

Oakland finally consented to letting Little League cut the grass - but only if it used a push mower, because of the potential liability involving power mowers.

The city also balked at the A’s and Good Tidings Foundation’s plan to speed installation of a sprinkler system, saying they had to obtain all manner of permits and permission - and that would take weeks.

Most of all, however, Parks and Rec objected to the plan to make the infield Little League-size - saying it would make the field unplayable for high school and adult teams that might want to use it.

More like Leslie Nope. The A’s grew frustrated and gave the money to Richmond, who were glad to have the free money and turned it into a refurbished ballpark in about two months.

The moral of the story: Just take the free money, stupid.
