The dean of Kinki University in Japan announced yesterday that the school will change its name, because some are sick of people laughing at the school:
Say hello (and goodbye) to the Kinki Devils
The Japanese university actually plays American football, but is changing its name.
"The word kinky also means perverted," he explained to Japanese media. "We have no other choice than to change the English name because we are serious about pursuing a more international school culture."
Thank you for that explanation, sir.
So why is this sports? Well, it appears Kinki University also has an American football team! They’re called — no joke — the Kinki Devils, a name they may or may not have picked out while Googling strip club names. The team with the light blue uniforms here appears to be Kinki. It also appears to be the only picture of the Devils on the Internet.
Anyways, apparently collegiate American football is actually a thing in Japan. In Kinki's division, teams get points (soccer and hockey style) for wins, losses and ties. Unfortunately, Kinki had a bad season, going 2-5 with two shutout losses. Hopefully the name change helps them on the field, too.
