Most interviewers can’t be expected to understand the minutia of a game at a level players do, but it’s often helpful to at least have a passing understanding of the sport. Knowing who won the match normally comes in handy, for example.

Nicolas Mahut wasn’t expected to lose against Mikhail Kukushkin, but he did and here we are. Unfortunately one interviewer in the post-match press conference didn’t seem to know, because he never watched what happened. This is a particular brand of stunning laziness that we should applaud. It’s almost impossible to avoid information these days without muting Twitter, avoiding the Internet and staying away from conversations -- but this member of the media decided his primer on the match was “I heard you won,” and never looked into it more.
