Update! Team Japan’s Pokemon plane is a hoax, and the Twitter account below that is spreading the image is fake. We fell for it, and we’re sorry.
Alas, Japan did *not* fly to Brazil for World Cup on a Pokemon plane

Kotaku, which spotted out the hoax, has details.

Japan's plane for the World Cup. How awesome is that? pic.twitter.com/5wNKd7Le5z
— FIFA World Cup 2014 (@FIFAWorldCupTM) June 11, 2014 Japan showed up in Brazil for the World Cup today. And they did it in a Pokemon plane.
The Blue Samurai have 11 mascots for the World Cup, all of them Pokemon. That is how you can get super awesome things like a Japan jersey with Pikachu on it.
Japan’s plane was very big, capable of holding many more people than the 23 players, several coaches, training staff and management team of dozens. Odds are that several Pokemon got the empty seats.
We are working to confirm that Ash was the pilot.
