California Chrome didn’t win the Triple Crown because of Barack Obama

I don’t talk about politics often on the Internet because I am a sports writer, and as such, I write about sports and not politics. There are, of course, occasions where politics and sports intersect, but even then I’m wary to share my political views, because none of you care. You’d rather read about sports.

This is not a situation where sports and politics intersect:

Congrats, Cynthia! Part of my job is reading opinions people have on Facebook, and this is the largest logical leap I’ve ever seen! I scanned the NYT website to find this comment, but could not before hitting my monthly limit of articles.

Whether you are a Democrat or Republican or a Libertarian or a member of the Green Party, I think we can all agree California Chrome did not lose the Triple Crown because of Barack Obama. He is a politician, and horses are horses. He did not cause one of the horses to go faster than the other horses, nor has he proposed any legislation that would have affected the result of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

If we had a fascist dictator or lived in a group-governed commune, California Chrome still would not have run that race as fast as that other horse. And even if politicians did have the ability to prevent Triple Crown winners, we would also have to blame Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and George W. Bush for having terms in which no horses won the Triple Crown. (Good job, Jimmy Carter. Y’all were doin’ it right.)
