A pitcher’s job is to throw things, but it’s such a specific type of throwing things that sometimes, when asked to throw things in ways besides pitching, they screw up horribly. Here is Yankees pitcher Shane Greene trying to underhand toss a baseball roughly 15 feet:
Yankees pitcher Shane Greene messes up underhand toss realllllly badly
“Here, I’ll just lightly toss this to you WITH EVERY OUNCE OF STRENGTH IN MY BODY”

The Padres just had a 105-year-old woman throw out a first pitch, and she successfully tossed it underhand about that length. Get a professional pitcher out there to do the same thing in the heat of the moment and WHOOOOOOPS!
Greene didn’t let the runner come around to score. He actually ended up having three errors on the night -- Deadspin compiled all of them, as well as the fourth ball hit back to him which he did his best not to mess up -- but none ended up yielding runs, so let’s get the nervous rookie some fielding practice.
