John Wayne’s heirs want to sell alcohol with his famous nickname, Duke. However, Duke University has a problem with this: How will people know that this alcohol is affiliated with John Wayne, the Duke, and not the prestigious North Carolina university?
John Wayne’s family is suing Duke, so we get to root against Duke
John Wayne was the Duke. Duke University is Duke. This shouldn’t be confusing, but it’s confusing enough for a lawsuit, and we know which side we’re on.
So the Waynes are suing Duke, hoping that they can claim a trademark to “Duke” for alcohol sales.
This isn’t directly a sports story -- its an issue involving Duke University, a school that has many non-basketball facets -- but it’s 100 PERCENT A SPORTS STORY.
