Blessed to get the autographs of Evan & Vincent, two unbelievably strong cancer survivors, on my cleats today pic.twitter.com/vP7Valyh1I

“It’s flipping the script a little bit, but I think it means something to them.”

For decades, excited children from all over the world have waited after games and practices to get autographs from superstar athletes. It might even be one of the best ways for kids to learn how to exercise patience.
However, kids never expect the tables to be turned on them during that experience.
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III is one of the most sought after athletes when it comes to autographs. That’s why when Griffin asks children for their autographs, their jaws drop.
On Saturday, Griffin removed his cleats following practice. Everyone thought that he was going to give them away. Then, he flipped the script. Griffin asked two cancer survivors for their autographs. Evan Washo and Vincent Silver Jr. were the superstars that day.
“They don’t expect me to ask them for their autographs. It was more like, ‘OK, cool.’ Down the line hopefully they remember that and say I was their first autograph.” – Robert Griffin III (ESPN)
Griffin promised to send Washo and Silver a pair of their favorite color cleats at a later date.
Griffin also asked 18-year old Jamia Johnson for her autograph on his practice jersey. Johnson was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease and got to attend practice as part of the Make-A-Wish program.
“When I was growing up I always wanted to meet guys I looked up to, role models. If I’d have met Michael Jordan and he asked for my autograph there would have been a shock. It’s flipping the script a little bit, but I think it means something to them. If I’m their first autograph that’s an honor to me.”
In a day and age when professional athletes are revered and regarded as heroes, it’s nice for one to recognize who the real heroes are.
