Happy 60th birthday to ‘The Catch’

On September 29, 1954, Willie Mays blew America’s mind.

Six decades ago, Willie Mays did something that we’re still talking about.

The drive from Vic Wertz went an estimated 425 feet -- far enough to get out of every single current ballpark. Mays is on record saying that the throw -- keeping the runner from advancing two bases -- was better than the catch, and Bob Feller wasn’t impressed at all.

The rest of us, though, can look at that danged catch and appreciate it. Happy 60th birthday, The Catch.
