Embarrassed by Mike Bell’s comments, given he’s on our flagship station. Inappropriate and disappointing.
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) October 7, 2015 Falcons condemn Atlanta radio host following sexist rant during Yankees-Astros
Mike Bell is an afternoon radio host in Atlanta on 92.9/The Game. On Tuesday night he took to Twitter to unleash a sexist, nonsensical tirade against Jessica Mendoza of ESPN -- who became the first woman to work as an analyst during an MLB postseason game.
Many celebrated the Olympic gold medalist, who had previously shown astute baseball analysis on Baseball Tonight and Sunday Night Baseball. That wasn’t good enough for Bell, because she was a woman.
Not only did Bell slam Mendoza’s ability to do her job, but he accused ESPN of being “too frigging cute,” as if the appointment of Mendoza was solely because of her gender, and not her skill. He didn’t stop there.
A woman made history tonight calling an MLB Playoff game for ESPN. This is what an Atlanta radio guy thought of it. pic.twitter.com/xf3Rc07EFY
— Boiled Sports (@BoiledSports) October 7, 2015 It should be noted that despite spending much of the night telling people he wasn’t going to “hide from what he wrote,” on Wednesday he did precisely that -- deleting all his tweets not only from last night, but trying to erase his horrible long-standing history of being sexist.
Mike Bell cast his lot with sexism a LONG time ago. His entire raison d’être has been appealing to “real men” by putting down women, LGBTQ and anyone who doesn’t immediately resonate with the lowest common denominator. His employers have shown no willingness to put a stop to this in the past, and neither Bell nor 92.9/The Game showed any remorse for what happened until the Falcons called him out.
A poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed that 58 percent of respondents thought Bell 's "apology" was good enough and that he should not face any punishment. On Wednesday he was suspended by the station. Time will tell whether his suspension had any meaningful impact, or if it's simply a public relations move to try to let this story blow over.
