Royals fans celebrated by ripping down the Kansas Jayhawks’ goalposts and throwing them in a lake

If there was a dark spot to Kansas City ending its 30-year World Series championship drought Sunday night, it was that the Game 5 victory took place in Queens.

As in Boston in 2004, when another road victory ended so many years of waiting, the fans back home did what they could, and found the nearest available sports and destroyed it. In this case: breaking into Memorial Stadium and ripping the Jayhawks’ goalposts out of the ground.

The University of Kansas, you may have heard, is not having a great season, and could be reasonably expected to have its goalposts left intact this year, barring a blowout victory over an even worse team. So: congrats, Royals. Those goalposts aren’t going to tear themselves down.
