Las Vegas honors Jerry Tarkanian with unique tribute
Hotels along the Strip turned off their lights for three minutes on Wednesday to honor the former UNLV coach.


The Las Vegas strip went dark on Wednesday night in honor of former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, who passed away last week at the age of 84.

Even Reno honored Tark by dimming the light on the famous Reno Arch.

— Ben Ross (@BenRossKOLO) February 19, 2015 This is the ninth time that the Strip has performed this unique memorial in honor of an individual or event. The first time was in 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
The lights were also dimmed after the deaths of Sammy Davis Jr. (1990), Dean Martin (1995), George Burns (1996), Frank Sinatra (1998) and Ronald Reagan (2004). It also occurred in 2001 after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 and in 2009 as part of “Earth Hour”.
