How terrifying is this Florida golf course gator, really?

James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.
This golf course photo from Florida has elicited some interesting comments in the SBNation.com office. Being from a wide range of geographic locations and backgrounds, we thought it only fair to give a full and unbiased view of what this golf gator is (or isn’t).
Michigan resident Kurt Mensching
“I give it an 8.”
Floridian (and professional alligator grader*) Bud Elliott
“This is a good-sized gator. And the golf course that originally posted the photo recognized that, writing ‘Dick Huber took these pictures today ... a nice size gator ...’ But the TV station’s characterization as a ‘massive’ gator is hyperbole. Judging by the perspective of the flag stick, which I’ll assume to be standard seven feet, this is probably a six or seven footer. If I had a canal or lake behind my house I wouldn’t let a small dog play back there unsupervised if this thing was hanging around. I give it a 7, mostly because he gives zero fucks by laying right by the golf ball.”
*This is a lie.
Florida Gators enthusiast Spencer Hall
“I think that’s a pretty decent gator. Like, above a Wal-Mart gator, but below Trader Joe’s. That’s a Publix-sized gator.”
Resident Australian James Dator (yes, that’s me)
“What’s the big deal with gators anyway? No, this isn’t some macho thing like ‘I’d stand on that green,’ because I’d totally book it, but objectively I don’t really get it. Saltwater crocs -- now that’s where it’s at. Then we’d be talking about some monsters. Since that’s not really the exercise here I’ll just give the gator a 7.”
