House Speaker John Boehner was in the mood for some March Madness fun when Ohio State’s marching band helped honor golfing legend Jack Nicklaus in Washington, but his joke fell flat -- really flat. So flat that his quip garnered jeers from the crowd in attendance.
John Boehner mocks Ohio State at ceremony honoring Jack Nicklaus
“A special thank you to the Ohio State marching band for being here. I guess they’ve got a little more time on their hands after the Round of 32.”
The Buckeyes lost to No.2 seed Arizona on Sunday and Boehner was there to rub salt in the wound. It’s OK though. It’s not like they traveled to Washington to help Congress salute a sporting legend or anything. Nicklaus WENT TO OHIO STATE also. So essentially he made fun of a bunch of kids AND the man receiving an award.
Nicklaus was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the nation, for his lifetime achievements. It became an impromptu roast of the Buckeyes, which Boehner tried to play off when groans came from the noticeably uncomfortable crowd.
He was super grateful though.
Grateful to the @OhioState marching band for being part of the #NicklausGoldMedal ceremony. http://t.co/nfq3pRGb6M
