The most anticipated fight of the year will also be the most expensive. Sources close to HBO and Showtime recently informed the Wall Street Journal that the welterweight title fight will cost $99 for HD and $89 for SD. This rumor emerged following a stall in the negotiations between the HBO-Pacquiao team and the Showtime-Mayweather team over revenues from the broadcast.
Mayweather-Pacquiao PPV will cost more to watch than any fight ever
It’s worth it though ... right? Right?
HBO and Showtime are currently in talks with Comcast, Time Warner, and DirecTV, who will be the primary distributors of the fight. Dish Network and AT&T are also negotiating deals over the broadcast.
Negotiations have moved so slowly due to the inevitable record-setting revenues this fight will generate. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Some industry observers have predicted that it could top three million pay-per-view purchases, which could amount to upward of $300 million.” That’s nearly twice the revenue of the previous record holder, Mayweather-Alvarez.
