J.R. Smith ejected for foul that injures Jae Crowder

Smith backhanded Crowder on a play in the third quarter.

Game 4 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics has moved past chippiness and is now in hostile territory. J.R. Smith was ejected after he backhanded Jae Crowder on a play under the hoop in the third quarter.

When Crowder fell from the blow, his left leg crumpled beneath him. He was helped off the court by his teammates with a left knee sprain and will not return.

UPDATE: After the game, Smith addressed the swing and a potential suspension for the next series.

The Cavs are on their way to sweeping the series, but in the next round they might be shorthanded. Smith could face a suspension for the hit on Crowder, while Kevin Love’s status is up in the air after he left the game with a shoulder injury.
