Jeff Van Gundy rips Augusta National’s racist, sexist history during ESPN broadcast

On Wednesday, NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy spent a moment of his time on the ESPN airwaves reminding us about Augusta National’s racist, sexist history.

Augusta National required all of its caddies to be black until 1959, yet admitted no African-American members until 1990. It did not admit women until 2012, and did so under immense pressure from the media, golf community and public sphere.

Jeff Van Gundy said he believes he would not make a great ESPN analyst for The Masters because he would feel obligated to remind viewers of the club’s history. I disagree. A willingness to address those issues head-on would make JVG a great Masters analyst. (His lack of golf experience would perhaps be a minor problem.)
