U.S. Soccer is trying to trademark ‘Dos a Cero’

A rallying cry forged by fans could soon be owned by U.S. soccer. A trademark filing from late June shows that “Dos a Cero” has been registered as a trademark, which could limit how much the phrase is used in the future.

The “Dos a Cero” chant began thanks to USA beating Mexico in four key games by, you guessed it, 2-0. It raises an interesting question about who “owns” chants that are created organically. Should the team have any claim to it simply because their performance started it, or should these belong to the people who made it catch on? U.S. Soccer seems to think they know the answer.
