Rugby ball explodes when kicked, opponent scores with deflated ball

James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.
We’ve all seen that fake marketing video where Hulk kicks the soccer ball so hard it explodes, but it actually happened in rugby. Northland was playing Southland in New Zealand’s ITM Cup when the ball exploded right when a player kicked it. It smacked right into the arms of an opponent, who then picked the ball up and scored.
It remains to be seen if Roger Goodell will try to suspend anyone. We can add this to the annals of great ball explosions like Martin Madonado smacking the cover off a baseball.
