Rebellious teenage tortoise briefly crawls to freedom

An 80-pound tortoise tried slowly and, for a time, successfully to gain its freedom in Florida this week.

Zulu made it half a mile into the western frontier before he was recaptured.

“When he gets his mind going and he wants to leave, he just goes,” said Zulu’s owner, who was alerted by social media to the tortoise’s capture and went to pick up the 18-year-old reptile.

“The tortoise turned his head toward her,” reports the Miami Herald, “but didn’t move.”

Perhaps he just needed wheels?
