Jay Williams played a total of 75 NBA games before his career was cut short by an awful motorcycle accident. Even though his time in the league was limited, he still has cool stories to tell about it.
Former Bull says Michael Jordan used to bet $100K on rock, paper, scissors
Recently he went on The Brilliant Idiots podcast to talk about his days playing ball, and -- most interestingly -- about gambling with the one and only Michael Jordan.
Williams started by talking about how his family never had a lot of money, so coming into the NBA with a multi-million dollar contract was a shock to his system.
“When you see other guys on planes gambling money ... you start living that life.”
Then, he casually brings up the G.O.A.T.
“I used to have dudes on our team who were messing around with MJ. And MJ was like, ‘Bet it back, bet this back. And I’m like, ‘Why are you fucking with the big bank? Why are you fucking with Brand Jordan? He can’t lose. Last year he made $150 million, how are you messing with him?’”
MJ has unlimited funds, basically. Williams sounds like he played it smart until he goes into the part about rock, paper, scissors ...
“Think about gambling to the next degree. Rock, paper, scissors you bet $20,000 all day long. Why wouldn’t you? You get bored.”
And goes on...
“And don’t get yourself down in the dice game. Don’t be in the corner and let some dude keep fading you out and all of a sudden you’re down $100,000 and he’s like, ‘Yo bet it back -- rock, paper, scissors for $100,000.’”
The hosts Charlamagne and Andrew Schulz are astonished, and Williams maintains a matter-of-fact attitude about those gambling days. “It’s part of the experience, man,” he says.
