Through his first seven pitches of Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday, Cleveland’s Josh Tomlin looked like he was on the way to throwing a gem. Just 15 pitches later, he was lucky to have made it through the first inning.
The Indians forgot how to call for a flyball and it cost them 2 crucial runs
Tomlin recorded two outs on just five pitches and had Kris Bryant in an 0-2 hole. The Indians were a pitch away from a dominant first inning. One pitch later, it all came unglued.
The problems started when Bryant turned an 0-2 offering around and launched it over the left-center wall for a solo home run.
It was an unexpected dinger, considering the situation.
Following back-to-back singles, the Cubs were threatening to score more. That’s when Tomlin induced a fairly routine flyball to right-center. It seemed like Tomlin had managed to escape the jam.
Not quite.
Confusion between Tyler Naquin and Lonnie Chisenhall led to the ball dropping, two runs scoring, and Indians catcher Roberto Perez getting crushed on a play at the plate.
One strike away from a three-up, three-down inning. Instead, a home run and a massive defensive blunder put the Indians in a 3-0 hole.
