Are you sitting down? Good. So Addison Russell hit a grand slam in Game 6 of the World Series, giving the Cubs a 7-0 lead (Update: Cubs won 9-3 to force Game 7). You might remember that the Cubs acquired Russell from the A’s in 2014, in exchange for Jeff Samardzija. History has not looked kindly on this deal, but you probably knew that.

The Cubs used Addison Russell and Smash Mouth to troll the A’s and this makes sense we promise.

What you might not have known is that the A’s Twitter account and Smash Mouth’s Twitter account — yes, the band Smash Mouth, the guys with that song from “Shrek” — got into an embarrassing fight on Twitter earlier this week.
What does that have to do with Russell and the Cubs today?

Yes, that’s the Cubs Twitter account singing lyrics to Smash Mouth’s hit, “All Star,” and it is definitely intentional:

It’s OK, @thisguy3496, we know you got the joke, but this is important evidence and the people need to see it.
So to recap: World Series Game 6 included a grand slam from Addison Russell, and one that made him the first player in MLB history to drive in six runs during a World Series elimination game — Russell drove in two earlier, thanks to Tyler Naquin forgetting that catching the ball was the point. Our reward for all this was to watch the Cubs’ Twitter insert itself into a feud between the A’s Twitter and Smash Mouth’s Twitter.
