Athletes and coaches are frequently asked about games being a “must win,” even though there are actually very few “must win” games in sports. If the season ends with a loss, it’s a must win game. Otherwise it’s not. Game 7 of the World Series is definitely in the former category.

The joking question came from Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe:
Game 7 of the World Series doesn’t come around every year, so I guess you have to make the jokes while you can. Shaughnessy looked overjoyed just asking the question. This is only the third Game 7 of the World Series since 2003, so he’s probably been sitting on that question for a while.
At least Francona appreciated the humor.
The internet had a more mixed reaction.
