Aubrey Plaza’s Pistol Shrimps are the best basketball show in Los Angeles

The best basketball team in Los Angeles is getting a documentary. No, not the Clippers, not the Lakers, and not UCLA. It's the Pistol Shrimps, the women's rec league team made up of actors, comedians and models, notable for their hijinks-filled Instagram and GQ fame. Here's a trailer for the movie that aired Wednesday.

It’s no surprise if you’ve never heard of them, so here’s a brief explainer.

Who are the Pistol Shrimps?

The most famous Pistol Shrimp is Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza, although apparently she recently pulled off a midseason trade? I dunno. I’ll leave that to the Pistol Shrimp expert analysts. Those exist, right? Anyway, there’s also a Plaza-centric trailer floating around.

Most of the women are around Hollywood or the entertainment industry or whatever you wanna call it.

What is a pistol shrimp?

aww

Why do you care about the Pistol Shrimps?

I started following them on Instagram a couple years ago when I read that GQ feature (shoutout to my dude Steven LeBron), so they’ve been a pretty important part of my feed for a couple years. They seem pretty cool. I’d love to go to a game if I’m ever in Los Angeles.

Why should we care about the Pistol Shrimps?

If you don’t live in Los Angeles or can’t catch the documentary, I’ve heard rave reviews just now from my coworkers about a podcast, Pistol Shrimps Radio, from Matt Gourley and Jeremy Carter. It’s somehow a live play-by-play of the Pistol Shrimps’ games and also very entertaining. Or so I’m told. So they have some episodes on SoundCloud you can check out.

What would they change about basketball?

GQ: What’s one rule you hate about the sport, and how would you change it?

Hawkey: I...can’t figure out how to not double dribble.

Plaza: I don’t like the no-swearing rule. I would like to get extra points for aggressive and inappropriate language.

Blasucci: I wish they would give points for jokes on the court!

Trimbur: I don’t like the foul rules. I like to foul.

Vallon: Three seconds in the paint. We always forget about that one.

Levi-Crouch: I hate that you can’t wear jewelry, ‘cause I would like to look more blinged-out on the court.

Stetten: I hate that Ryan Gosling doesn’t have to come to our games. I think that should be like a rule or something.

Is there anything else we should know about the Shrimps?

I play basketball once a week and I cannot do this.
