Simone Manuel stole the show in Rio with historic swim

She tied Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in a terrific photo finish.
Simone’s reaction when she saw she won was awesome, too.
Here she is registering in the win in the pool ...
... and reacting as she climbed out.
Simone gave an emotional interview moments after her historic swim.

“I mean, this medal is not just for me. It’s for a whole bunch of people that came before me and have been an inspiration to me. Maritza [Correia], Cullen [Jones], and it’s for all the people after me, who believe they can’t do it. And I just want to be inspiration to others that you can do it.”
And she teared up during the National Anthem.
This gold medal is especially significant because, as Jenée Desmond-Harris writes at Vox.com “the particularly racist history of American swimming pools — and resulting lack of opportunity for black swimmers for decades — makes it an even more poignant victory.”
Simone Manuel’s Olympic gold is also a victory over swimming’s racist history https://t.co/5ClTK6cVJf #Rio2016

You can see the message Manuel sent with her win in this Instagram post from LeBron James, talking about his daughter, too.
Congratulations on the gold, Simone!
It is an honor to represent the USA! God is working in me! I am so blessed and grateful. Thank you all so much for your support.

This win will stand forever, and so will your second-greatest accomplishment in Rio: Getting your roommate Katie Ledecky to do the whip.
