Hassan Mead of the U.S. had an unfortunate fall during the final lap of the men’s 5000m preliminary round. Mead got tangled up with Great Britain’s Mo Farah; Farah stumbled but did not fall, and Mead scrambled to get back up and finish the race. Farah finished 3rd, qualifying him for the final, while Mead finished 13th.

After the race, Farah reportedly went up to Mead to support him alongside a number of runners, and his teammate Bernard Lagat was the biggest supporter of all, telling him to “not be disappointed” and that “there’s a way maybe [Mead] can get in.” Mead showed appreciation for Lagat’s support with a fistbump.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Mead has filed an appeal to get into the final, and perhaps he will win that appeal, given that fellow U.S. runner Abbey D’Agostino went through a similar fall and advanced into the women’s 5000m final with her own appeal.
