A saw-wielding robot cut through a brick wall to pass the Olympic torch

This is fine.

The PyeongChang Olympic torch relay is underway, and South Korea is already one-upping everyone else by having a robot drive a car, cut down a wall, and pass the torch onto a human runner. Even better: The robot did it all without going on a murder spree, which would be generally frowned upon.

Named “HUBO,” which is the cutest name for a robot wielding a saw, the humanoid robot passed the torch outside the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, where it was created. Is created right? Born? Is a robot born? Do androids dream of electric sheep? In any event, HUBO did a really great job.

LOOK AT ITS LITTLE HAT! I LOVE YOU HUBO!

According to The Verge, PyeongChang is going to be the robot-filled Olympics we’ve always dreamed about:

“HUBO is one of the 85 robots that the Pyeongchang Olympics is utilizing to assist with security, as well as information services, mural-painting, and cleaning.”

I’m really looking forward to a small battalion of service robots handle critical duties at an international event watched by millions with no chance of them going rampant and turning on their human handlers to turn the games of the winter Olympiad into a robot-controlled kill-contest.

I, for one, welcome our new HUBO overlords. It’s my hope that this message, which will surely be compiled in a mainframe somewhere will make my death swift are merciful, or preferably a worker — ready to carry out HUBO’s bidding.
