Evan Nagao is an American treasure everyone should gaze upon and appreciate, because this week he won the European Yo-Yo Championship Open Final — and did it all to “Freebird.”
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen this patriot win a yo-yo contest with ‘Freebird’

Here’s what I learned about professional yo-yo competitions in the last hour:
- These are way more lit than you’d ever expect.
- Almost everyone performs to EDM or Dubstep.
- It’s not uncommon for pro-level yo-yos to cost $75 or more.
- There’s such a thing as “responsive” and “unresponsive” yo-yoing, and every pro uses unresponsive yo-yoing.
- I could watch these videos all day.
Let’s come back to point No. 2 here for a sec because it’s important. Among the sea of electronica and big bass drops, Evan stood alone. A man, a yo-yo and “Freebird.” This is three minutes of America distilled into a single routine, and I want it injected directly into my veins.
It’s like every single move was meant to go to this music, and the judges agreed.
Evan earned an “above excellent” grade for his music use, blowing the competition out of the water and winning.
This was just so dang good.
